With Christmas following hot on the heels of Thanksgiving dinner, and the New Year feasts after all those cookies and eggnog and turkey . . . it can be a pretty depressing season if you’re overweight. The great news is that you don’t have to deprive yourself over the holidays in order to avoid gaining weight.</p>
<p><span id="more-46"></span>It’s usually a bad idea to try and lose weight during this time of year, but you can certainly avoid gaining any with a few special tips. It’s all about making the right food choices and avoiding the binges that commonly occur after depriving yourself too long in the face of chocolaty, pumpkiny temptation.</p>
<p>To start with, avoid drinking alcohol, which is filled with empty calories. Instead, sip some sparkling water. Spruce it up with a dash of fruit juice, or try one of those new flavoured waters instead. A glass of champagne to toast the New Year is fine, but other than that, you should try to limit high calorie alcohol.</p>
<p>Moderation is the key to holiday feasting. You know how you just eat and eat and feel so stuffed you can barely move after each huge dinner? Well, this year, you’re going to enjoy all those same foods, but without that uncomfortable about-to-explode feeling! A good rule of thumb is to take no more than what fits on the palm of your hand. Apply this rule to each type of food and only put three different foods on your plate at a time. You can have more, but only if you are hungry.</p>
<p>It also helps to use less of all condiments. Love that creamy salad dressing that Aunt Martha makes? Use less of it and toss with your salad, rather than pouring it over the top. Or have a little dressing on the side and dip your fork before stabbing that lettuce, you’ll get the taste, with minimal calories. Gravy should be limited as well. You can still enjoy the taste without drowning your potatoes.</p>
<p>Christmas goodies are very tempting, but as long as you just have one or two instead of a dozen cookies, you should be fine. When it’s time for pie, opt for a plain slice, instead of loading it up with whipped cream or ice cream. Making a small sacrifice means you can still have your cake and eat it, too.</p>
<p>To avoid scarfing everything in sight, it helps not to be ravenous when you hit the Christmas buffet. In this case, coming hungry is a bad idea, so have a piece of toast or a salad before leaving the house to help fill you up a bit and keep you from making food choices based only on starvation.</p>
<p>You don’t have to eat just low-cal Jell-O for Christmas and it isn’t necessary to give up on your weight, either. While you may not lose any weight this holiday season, you can definitely stop yourself from packing on more pounds that will have to come off after Jan. 1st. So, enjoy your holiday meals, just in moderation.</p>

<p>Hoodia is the sexy new weight loss ingredient that will revolutionize the diet industry, if you listen to all the hype. There are hundreds of diet pills, shakes, bars, and even lollipops on the market today that base their claims on hoodia. You would think from millions of dollars spent on advertising this miracle cure, everyone on the planet would be thin by now. They aren&#8217;t, of course, and obesity rates continue to climb. Understanding the facts about hoodia will help you decide if it should be a part of your diet regimen.</p>
<p><span id="more-43"></span><strong>What Is Hoodia?</strong></p>
<p>The hoodia used in weight loss products is derived from the <a href="http://herbalus.com/hoodiagordoniiabsolute.php">Hoodia Gordonii</a> plant. Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent that grows mainly in South Africa and Namibia. The plant has been used for centuries by African tribesmen to stave off hunger on long journeys across the Kalahari desert. The tribesmen believe that Hoodia Gordonii suppresses appetite.</p>
<p>In the late seventies, the active ingredient in hoodia believed to be responsible for the appetite suppression effect, named P57, was isolated and patented. Two major pharmaceutical companies, Phytopharm and Pfizer, were granted licenses to synthesize P57 for use in weight loss products. Pfizer abandoned the license in 2002 claiming difficulties with the synthesizing process as well as disturbing revelations about P57&#8217;s effect on the liver. Pfizer did not believe that the FDA would approve the synthesized hoodia.</p>
<p>Scientific fact did not stop diet products manufacturers from using natural hoodia gordonii in their products. In 2002, the San tribe has been granted exclusive rights over the hoodia plants in South Africa and they have granted licenses to harvest the plants for use in weight loss aids.</p>
<p>Hundreds of weight loss products now claim to contain hoodia and many point to a study done by Dr. Richard Goldfarb as proof of hoodia&#8217;s miraculous claims.</p>
<p><strong>The Goldfarb Study</strong></p>
<p>Dr. Richard Goldfarb of Bucks County Clinical Research conducted a clinical trial of DEX L-10, a diet pill containing hoodia. The study was conducted at the request of the diet pill manufacturer. The purpose of the study was to show that the pill worked. The study was conducted on only seven subjects. All subjects were given the diet pills and none were given a placebo. This means that the placebo effect could not be controlled for. The placebo effect states that some physical benefit may occur simply from the subject believing that they are getting medicine that works. When some subjects get the medicine and some get an inactive ingredient that looks like medicine, only the real benefits of the active ingredients will show. The conclusions of the study were that all of the seven subjects lost weight on the diet pills. This study was never written up in a peer-reviewed journal, which is the standard for clinical acceptance.</p>
<p><strong>Hoodia Scams</strong></p>
<p>Because hoodia is used in weight loss aids, it is not subject to regulation by the <a href="http://www.fda.gov">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)</a>. That leaves hoodia wide open to scams perpetrated by diet pill manufacturers who stand to make tens of millions of dollars a year peddling their wares.</p>
<p>A recent study by a laboratory investigating hoodia levels in &#8220;hoodia&#8221; diet products found that less than half of the products tested contained any hoodia at all. Many of the others contained hoodia gordonii in such small concentrations that the lab did not feel these could possibly have any therapeutic effect.</p>

<p>There are many 	diet products on the market that do contain clinically-proven 	ingredients to help with burning fat and losing weight. Hoodia, 	however, just doesn&#8217;t live up to all of its hype.</p>

Called Orlistat and sold as Xenical in it&#8217;s full potency form, the lower dose medication will be called&#8221; Alli&#8221;. This pill actually reduces the fat content the body absorbs. When taken with meals, Orlistat actually blocks one quarter of the fats consumed.</p>

The new version will be made by GlaxoSmithKlien PLC as Xenical is manufactured by RocheHoldingAG. Experts say the drug is to be used along with proper eating habits and exercise. Without these two added components the new pill will have little effect. The new drug will have half the potency of Xenical and the price will be around $1 to $2 dollars a day.</p>
<p>The Food and Drug Administration says the the most common side effect is change in bowel habits with loose stools and oily spotting. Eating low fat foods will help reduce this side effect.</p>
<p>According to the FDA anyone who has had a transplant should not use this medication due to possible drug interactions. People on blood thinners or who have diabetes or thyroid disorders should consult with their doctors before use.</p>
<p>Dr.Sidney M. Wolf, director of Public Citizens Health Research Group, called the approval &#8220;the height of recklessness.&#8221;  Wolfe stated that studies on the prescription form have linked usage with precancerous lesions of the colon and and called for withdrawl of the prescription version.</p>

That isn’t to say it is not without value, quite the contrary in fact. Acai berry is a fantastic source of natural essential fatty acids, electrolytes, protein, vitamins A, B1 and E, and amino acids.  It can help balance your Ph to a more alkaline level (a healthier state of being) and act as an anti-inflammatory agent (inflammation is thought to be a major cause of disease overtime, including heart disease and cancer). The main benefit to acai berry, however, is its antioxidant power.</p>
